Safety Policy

The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safety of all participants and the security of equipment during kayak and canoe rentals. This policy outlines guidelines and requirements for both staff and customers.


General Requirements

• All renters must be 18 years or older or accompanied by a responsible adult.• Valid identification and a signed rental waiver are required before equipment is released.• Basic swimming ability is mandatory for all participants.• Water shoes, tennis shoes or sandals that strap around foot required.  No Flip Flops 


Safety Equipment

• Each renter will be provided with a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket (PFD), which must be worn at all times while on the water.• Dry bags with emergency contact instructions are available upon request.

Orientation and Safety Briefing

All renters must attend a pre-rental safety briefing that covers:

• Equipment operation and fitting• Waterway rules and navigation• Weather awareness• Emergency procedures and contact information• Return policy and time limits 


Weather and Water Conditions

• Rentals are not permitted during hazardous weather (e.g., thunderstorms, high winds, or flood conditions).• Staff will check local weather and water conditions regularly and have authority to cancel or postpone rentals.

Supervision and Conduct

• Alcohol or drug use before or during rental is strictly prohibited.• Renters must follow designated routes and stay within allowed areas.• Any reckless or unsafe behavior will result in immediate termination of the rental without refund.

Equipment Care and Security

• Renters are responsible for the return of all equipment in good condition.• Damage or loss of equipment may incur repair or replacement fees.• Equipment must not be left unattended or taken outside permitted zones.

Emergency Procedures

In case of an emergency:

• Call 911 and Upper Yadkin Outfitters.• Use paddle to signal for help if within visual range.• Remain with your vessel if capsized, unless in immediate danger.

Staff Training

Staff members are trained in:

• CPR and First Aid• Water rescue techniques• Rental equipment maintenance• Customer assistance and emergency protocols 


Liability and Insurance

• All participants must sign a liability waiver.• The rental company maintains liability insurance but assumes no responsibility for injuries due to negligence or failure to follow this policy.
